God Knows

wp480 01 Ald squirrel1 20240330 800Sometimes God makes me laugh out loud with the antics of creatures. In this case a squirrel poised on a fence wire intently watching something — something I couldn’t see. One false move and she would lose her balance. Hmm, sounds familiar.wp480 02 Ald pussy willow cap 20240330 800
Sometimes God makes me chuckle to myself: a pussy willow wearing a jaunty cap. I wonder if God ever thinks we look jaunty?wp480 03 Ald CA poppy 20240330 800
Sometimes God instills in me a sense of wonder for the most common things: a California poppy — glowing, radiating beauty from within. Can I do that?wp480 04 Ald mauve wild radish 20240330 800
Look at those gorgeous veins, I exclaim to a passerby, pointing to the wild radish petals. Do I see my own veins as lovely? God made those, too.wp480 05 Ald W for west 20240330 800
I am looking directly west. A craftsperson took great care to make the W of this compass star artistically pleasing. Do I always try to do my best?wp480 06 Ald yellow ice plant 20240330 800
The yellow ice plant leaves make a pattern within the green ones. Do I see the patterns in my own life? Patterns that perhaps need tending?wp480 07 Ald fence post 20240330 800
Spirit draws my attention to a fence post. It stands witness to the ever-changing Pacific, to the souls who pass by whether pensive, blissful or somewhere in between. To what do I stand witness?wp480 08 Ald ivy 20240330 800
Sometimes God shows me how something like ivy can be viewed as positive, negative or neutral. Do I give others the freedom to be viewed at all angles?wp480 09 Ald ice plant flowers 20240330 800
Sometimes the plants themselves seem to stop me in my tracks just to say: hi! A friendly smile and greeting can change the trajectory of someone’s day.wp480 10 Ald squirrels2 20240330 800
When I arrived back where I started my walk, God gave me another belly laugh. Now there were two squirrels balanced precariously, looking at who-knows-what. God knows. I guess that will have to be enough for me.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

wp386 01 beach view daisies 20220617 1200There is something truly wild about the beaches in Mendocino county. wp386 02 jutting rock 20220617 1200
Perhaps it’s the jutting rocks thrusting their heads up willy-nilly along the shoreline. wp386 03 ice plant cliffs 20220617 1200
Or the way one has to inch down a steep trail as if walking a tightrope. wp386 04 daisy path 20220617 1200
Or the fact that many dusty paths lead to cliff edges wp386 05 purple flower overlook 20220617 1200
for stellar, yet precarious, views. wp386 06 ice plants yellow 20220617 1200

Joy

wp385 01 yellow leaf w shadow 20220530 1200This past Sunday our Quaker query was: Do I embrace Joy as a companion on my spiritual journey? wp385 02 mown path 20220530 1200
For me, the answer is yes. wp385 03 CA poppy 20220530 1200
Joy came one day like a sprite; a little ball of energy sent by God to help me chuckle — even laugh — amidst turmoil. wp385 04 pink wild radish 20220530 1200
I feel this joy is permanent. wp385 05 rattlesnake grass 20220530 1200
It can’t be shaken off by high winds or ominous depression. wp385 06 sweetpeas 20220530 1200
Joy stays the course, following me around wherever I go and touching everything I do. wp385 07 wild radish 20220530 1200
It doesn’t mean I’m happy all the time wp385 08 2 tall grass blowing 20220530 1200
or that I don’t grope around for God sometimes, feeling lost. wp385 09 dad weed 20220530 1200
Joy reminds me of love in that way; the kind of love between two people who have known one another for decades, have gone through thick and thin, yet their love still abides, dwells within each one. wp385 10 thistle 20220530 1200
I’m glad joy came to me that day with a wink wp385 11 wild radish field 20220530 1200
to let me know it had always been present.

Looking and Seeing

wp342 01 pink ball flowers 20210726 1200When I look down from the edge of a cliff I often feel a flutter of excitement.

wp342 02 pink stems 20210726 1200When I crouch down, I feel the thrill of another world.

wp342 03 bee on pea 20210726 1200I can see a bee I would have missed otherwise.

wp342 04 horsetail ferns 20210726 1200jpgOr how tall horsetails would look to a grasshopper. wp342 05 morning glory white 20210726 1200
Or how the edge of a morning glory petal can be as ragged as a butterfly wing after weeks of flight. wp342 06 dad weed 20210726 1200
I can better pick up on subtle differences in color. wp342 07 ca poppies, wild radish 20210726 1200
Or note the intricate design of everything from a California poppy leaf to the veined petal of a wild radish. wp342 08 morning glories w field 20210726 1200
When I stand back up, I realize this other world I’ve been observing is actually the world I live in every day. I’ve simply decided to look at it from another angle. Another perspective. What else can I look at differently?

Elation

wp325 01 horsetail spores 20210402 1200The spores that horsetails thrust up in the spring are called elaters. wp325 02 horsetail plumes 20210402 1200
I like that name because I feel elated when I look at them, wp325 03 horsetail inner 20210402 1200
whether close up wp325 04 horsetail w bench 20210402 1200
or from a distance. wp325 05 horsetail plumes w clouds 20210402 1200
In fact, I often feel elated when walking in nature. wp325 06 wild radish field 20210402 1200
The glory of creation is magnificent. wp325 07 stone w quartz 20210402 1200
Each rock, wp325 08 yellowed leaf 20210402 1200
each leaf wp325 09 sea palms 20210402 1200
and each sea palm that sways with every wave’s passing is an extraordinary blessing. wp325 10 white panticles 20210402 1200
When I try to count my blessings in this way, the number seems infinite. I tire before I reach triple digits. And then I chuckle, because I relish the elation it brings.

Plant Wisdom

wp283 01 mauve scotch broom1 20200515What message do the plants have to impart today? I say today because they are constantly communicating with me, in subtle or overt ways. This Scotch broom asks me: Do you know why we are this amazing color, when most of us are plain yellow? Cross-pollination. The mixing of our gene pool creates beauty untold.

wp283 02 hens chicks w ice plant 20200508The succulents: Praise be! We raise ourselves up in joy to greet each new day.

wp283 03 wild radish lavendar 20200508Wild radish: The patterns on our petals resemble feathered angel wings. Know that you are surrounded at all times with goodness; we are cheering for you.

wp283 04 salmon ice plant 20200508Ice plant bloom: The Center is where things are happening. My delicate fringe will fall, but my center will become fruit and seed—nourishment and progeny.

wp283 05 red ice plant 20200508Rock-clinging plants: We hold fast to our Foundation, even when the ground shifts below us.

wp283 06 2 flower, beeWhite-edged flower: Little though I am, the bee still finds its way to me.

wp283 07 closed pale foxglove 20200515Foxglove buds: We are not mute. When we are ready, we open like trumpets and herald the truth.

wp283 08 yellow flowers w rocks 20200508Yellow ground cover: We may be tiny, but together, we change the face of the earth.

Sheer Volume

wp274 01 poppies, red yarrow 20200508What leaves me gob smacked about the Mendocino area’s headlands in the spring is the sheer volume of flowers that flourish there.

Fly Away Home

wp273 01 ladybug head on 20200428Home means something different to each one of us.

wp273 02 foggy view 20200428For some it is a sense of place: a physical location on the planet.

The Great Awakening

wp270 01 Alder St headlands1 20200419I have been feeling dizzy, off kilter, half asleep—as if I have been living in a disturbing dream. I was banned from going to my familiar places—the places that make me whole.

wp270 02 2 poppy pod, vinca budForbidden from seeing the tiny treasures tucked into the headland fields—like California poppy pods and Vinca major buds.

wp270 03 2 CA poppy fieldBut this week a trail opened that snakes along the cliffs of the Pacific.

wp270 04 2 wild radish, weed headAnd my dizziness left me amid a wash of wild radish and buckhorn plantain.

wp270 05 poppy w struggling bugs 20200419I witnessed two bugs, covered with pollen, wrestling on the petals of a poppy.

wp270 08 Alder St headlands2 20200419I am once again completely awake.
