Reveling in Connection

wp459 01 RJ house2 20231124 800Navarro, California is a small town not too far from where I live. And I’m talking tiny: as in less than 150 people. wp459 02 RJ oval vessel 20231124 800
Every year the area has a tour of artist studios. wp459 03 RJ outdoor chair 20231124 800
I not only adore viewing art, but as a fellow artist, I love looking at the space in which each artist works. wp459 04 RJ house1 20231124 800
Many artists here work in their home or nearby, because space is at such a premium on the coast. wp459 05 RJ barn w art 20231124 800
When I met Rebecca Johnson, she was — and still is — working in a converted rustic barn. wp459 06 RJ barn w art 20231124 800
I read her bio and it mentioned she had gone to Hopewell Valley Central High School in New Jersey – the same school I attended, which only had about 300 students per grade. wp459 07 RJ twin tubes 20231124 800
And when I saw her, I knew we were about the same age. Sure enough, we had overlapped. What were the chances? wp459 08 RJ paint brushes 20231124 800
We talked about growing up in the same area and our drive to become artists despite having had only one art class per grade. That one class was art history and studio work all balled up together.wp459 09 RJ bird in trunk 20231124 800
Although our art is very different, and she is far more successful in making a living from her art, I really resonate with her artistic thought process. wp459 10 RJ drilled stone 20231124 800
Most people like to feel understood — especially about a piece of them that falls outside the norm — and I’m no exception. wp459 11 RJ house3 20231124 800
When I feel that connection, I’m more aware of humanity’s oneness. Aware we are all essentially living together, sharing space on this planet.

Joy Cometh in the Morning

wp451 01 PB dry meadow 20230710 1200I’ve been a morning person for a long time, but it hasn’t always been so. wp451 02 PB purple close 20230710 1200
When I was a teen, my family tried an experiment: they didn’t wake me up on a Saturday to see how long I’d sleep. I slept until 4 p.m. wp451 03 PB log w grass 20230710 1200
You’d think I wouldn’t be able to sleep that night, tossing and turning. But no, I went to bed at 10 p.m. and slept like a log. wp451 04 PB pink balls 20230710 1200
I began waking at dawn when I was in college. Technically I was not in college since I ran out of money the second semester of my second year. I decided to go to L’Abri because I could stay there for free if I worked half the day. This was back in 1981 — pre-internet — so most information was culled from a slightly more accurate version of Whisper-Down-the-Lane. wp451 05 PB ivory-pink w bee 20230710 1200
L’Abri was sort of like a Christian commune for studying an aspect of faith that perplexed you. Mine was: Guidance. wp451 06 PB pencil rock 20230710 1200
I knew the original L’Abri was in Switzerland and there was another in England, but I didn’t know about the fledgling one near Boston, Massachusetts, which was where I ended up. wp451 07 PB coastal daisies 20230710 1200
Since I was born outside Boston, it didn’t seem quite as exotic as Europe. However, I did have a roommate from New Zealand and that was enough for me. wp451 08 PB Mendo paintbrush 20230710 1200
Our large, cold, Victorian room within the mansion faced east and had no curtains on the human-sized windows. wp451 09 PB yellow bugle 20230710 1200
The sun rises early on the eastern edge of the time zone and we had a giant ball of light pierce our eyelids each morning, which made it difficult to “sleep in.” wp451 10 PB wild cuke 20230710 1200
I started to take walks upon waking, before breakfast and work began, to garner some solitude. The area was pastoral — large swathes of land dotted with mansions and farms. It wasn’t a place people walked. wp451 11 PB 2 purple balls 1200
One quiet morning a woman ran towards me from a barn, screaming that I had to help her immediately! Of course I complied. Had I known it was to deliver breach twin goats, I might have hesitated. wp451 12 PB pale pink 20230710 1200
The births were definitely something I felt God guided me towards that day. Afterwards, I was eager to start each day early, wondering what joy might be in store.

Mysterious Grace

wp447 01 dramatic sky 20230623 1200The black blur sped by ten inches from my nose
below the generous eave under which I sat
on a white plastic Adirondack chair.
It sounded like an old-fashioned dry mop
barely touching a spiderweb;
or like a paper napkin dropping onto a rug.
It was that quiet.
And it was small.
A hummingbird without the buzz;
a wren with soundless feathers.

Dusk fell hard,
ten thousand crickets sang in a rhythmic pulse,
a quarter moon shone whiter.

The thing flew past, again and again,
threading itself between the eave, my face
and the metal tulip rain chain hanging just to my right.

I didn’t startle.
I smiled each time it passed,
almost laughed outright.
Was it playing a game?
I sat completely still
even as a high-pitched mosquito
navigated my earlobe.

If I turned my head to the left to see it coming
minutes ticked by
and I would eventually straighten my neck
to keep it from cramping.
That’s the moment it would fly past.

Its flight was a grace.
I couldn’t force it to comply with my wishes
or make it reveal itself.
But when I acknowledged that fact
there it was, darting by me in the blackness:
a bat.

Its silent flight suddenly made sense:
soft fur, no feathers.
I smiled.
I am a naturalist at heart:
an observer.
I was gaining knowledge by experience
regarding bat flight.
And I accepted the grace.
I was not in control,
the bat was,
and if I wanted to observe it,
I had to accept its terms.

The bat flew by me forty times —
I counted —
never grazing my face,
never giving me warning,
always making me smile.

Elk Wisdom

wp446 01 bull elk staring 20230826 1200Elk: Late Morning

With his herd, he is now wary.
He must show the others he is king of the hill,
especially because I surprised him —
all of them —
around the bend of the mown trail.
One side a forest;
one side a tall grass field.
He stares me down.
I tilt my straw visor down;
no eye contact.
You didn’t see me as a threat before, I plead silently —
I’m still no threat.

I move slowly to the base of a forked tree.
If elks charge
I can quickly hide behind the fork.
His many points will gouge the aspen, not me — I hope.

He voices his displeasure
with a high-pitched shriek
that increases in volume and ends in a low taut bark.
Is it a warning?

I should sit down, make myself smaller,
make myself into an inconsequential rock.
But how many boulders are white with bold orange flowers
and shimmering sequins?
I am more concerned with grass stains than being gored;
thriftiness prevails.

A yearling male — a spike — in velvet
emerges from the forest with its mother.
Now he must show me his authority.
He sounds another shriek
and drives the spike and mother away,
crashing into the forest after them,
snapping dry branches with his clumsy,
yet magnificent, rack —
a one-elk stampede.
He only plows through a short distance,
a gesture to make his point.
They gradually return, chastised.

Will he chastise me?
I ruminate on that question.
I am sitting now,
grass stains be damned!
For all my love of nature,
I am also a realist.
I will not climb into an enclosure with a wolf
because our eyes met in a special way.
I have been hooved in the chest
by a well-meaning friendly deer,
attacked by a seemingly demure swan,
bitten out of the blue in a petting zoo by a draft horse.
I am a weakling
and papa bull is twice my size, at least.

I wait out the herd — uncomfortably;
imagine deer ticks crawling on me
and my pretty floral outfit.
At last the thirteenth elk moves into the woods.
I arise, brush the grass from my rump
and walk on
knowing my place.

wp446 02 bull elk bugling 20230826 1200Elk: Midafternoon

Innocently reading a book by a rabbi
in my gray cinderblock cell
at a retreat run by Cistercian nuns,
I was momentarily sidetracked
by a piercing shriek
ascending in both volume and register.
The bull elk was outside my door.
I quickly yet quietly slipped onto the porch
settling myself into a chair.

He was close
and his herd even closer.
One female
who seemed to get more leeway than the others
walked right towards me
as if she intended to join me on the porch for a chat.
Less than ten feet away
she changed course to walk around me,
but not before stopping and staring.
Her look was not like his — dominating —
but benign;
a look that said:
We are equally curious about one another.

She disappeared behind the building
voicing her dolphin chirps.
Were these strange noises to let her counterpart know her whereabouts?
Pinpoint her location for safety?

He felt comfortable now — unchallenged —
and let his front knees hit the ground,
his back legs folding under his hindquarters.
He began languidly munching
on the soft grass that grows in the shadows.
In his stillness I could finally count his points:
nine on one side,
eight on the other.

The gang began to relax,
half of them now in similar positions,
tearing grass from where they lay.

I went back inside to get my book about yearning.
For a moment, we all felt satisfied.

wp446 03 elk herd 20230826 1200Elk: Twilight

He, the vigilant seventeen-point elk, has lain down.
He brought his herd into an open field to bed for the night.
Most are collapsed with hooves under bodies,
still grazing.
How does he sleep
carrying that heavy weight on his head?

I feel for him
having to constantly prove he is worthy.
Can he ever truly rest,
one eye open in case something is awry,
one ear pricked for the yelping, gulping sound of his herd?

He stretches out his neck,
rests his chin on the ground.
The weight is off
for a moment now;
the weight is off.
