God’s Mercy

wp417 01 Tucson red-black 20230129 1200Have you ever felt guilty about a prayer uttered from your lips? I have. wp417 02 Tucson stars 20230129 1200
I recently asked God to get me out of a jam I had gotten myself into. wp417 03 Tucson pet wood 20230129 1200
On top of that, the prayer involved a moral dilemma of which I was ashamed. wp417 04 Tucson coral-like 20230129 1200
I was the “bad” person in this situation, and yet I was asking God for help. wp417 05 Tucson twigs 20230129 1200
I simply threw my hands up with a petition that sounded more like a yelp or cry. wp417 06 Tucson white balls 20230129 1200
I was willing to face the consequences; let the chips fall where they may, even if those chips fell into a dark abyss. wp417 07 Tucson crystals 20230129 1200
But after several months I was miraculously delivered, and this was part of God’s response to me: I love you. I do not want you to suffer so. I understand the strange constraints you are under. Do not mistake this for approval — simply understanding.

Reverential Feelings

wp402 01 Hedge Creek Falls Rob 20221005 1200I often feel tiny when confronted with the majesty of creation. And when my husband, Rob, and I visited Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, California, the feeling came on strong. wp402 02 Hedge Creek Falls basalt 20221005 1200
Perhaps it was due to standing beneath huge basalt columns. wp402 03 Hedge Creek Falls Rob tree1 20221005 1200
Or from watching Rob cross a giant log over a chasm wp402 04 Hedge Creek Falls Rob tree2 20221005 1200
as I held my breath. wp402 05 Hedge Creek Falls black acorns 20221005 1200
I also feel a sense of awe when I discover something new to me in nature — like black acorns! How could I not have known of their existence until now? wp402 06 Hedge Creek Falls above 20221005 1200
Lots of feelings spring up when I am surrounded by the natural world. wp402 07 Hedge Creek Falls in cave 20221005 1200
When I stood behind the waterfall, within a shallow cave, I was overcome with reverence. The small stream of water falling from an unseen source above gave me the feeling of being baptized by The Creator. wp402 08 Hedge Creek Falls hands 20221005 1200
Nearby handprints, although technically graffiti, added to the sense of healing by the mysterious “laying on of hands” that a number of churches embrace. wp402 09 Hedge Creek Falls 20221005 1200
In fact, the entire place brought to mind a natural cathedral with basalt organ pipes. wp402 10 Hedge Creek Falls vine 20221005 1200
After my reverie and a little more exploring, we climbed back up the trail. wp402 11 Hedge Creek Falls abstract 20221005 1200
At the top was an empty bulletin board that I hadn’t noticed when we began the trail. It was as if the hike was an abstract idea to which the hiker would assign meaning. And I had.

Snail’s Pace

wp240 snail2 20190916_103700Do you ever feel like you’re operating at a snail’s pace? I do.

wp240 snail1 20190916_103548Not only is everything in slow motion, but I feel as though I’m dragging a burden along. It remains stuck to me as I travel through my day.

wp240 snail4 20190916_104011When I finally let go, I feel so much lighter.

wp240 snail3 20190916_103924I can cross rocky paths much more easily.

wp240 snail5 20190916_113554I can even navigate around obstacles. My brokenness begins to heal.

wp240 snails in love 20190916_105712And there I find God—waiting for me to reach out and connect. When I do, I feel a sense of peace that surpasses all understanding.

Wood Wisdom

wp229 red wood 20190615_142907I have never seen wood look so red in the wild. I jump across the stream that enters the beach as a trickling waterfall dropping off the headlands. The water is absolutely clear. I am grateful for that which is still pristine.

wp229 wood w kelp O 20190615_143257A bulb kelp presented on a painterly log resembles a snake eating its tail. It creates a never-ending loop. God, how do I become whole? How do I touch Your Infinity without being consumed?

wp229 ochre stone w wood 20190615_142827An ochre stone rests in the groove of driftwood. Help me, God, to rest in Your everlasting arms.

wp229 log eyes 2 20190615_143329I come across a washed-up tree trunk. On one end I see two “eyes,” one of which is covered by sand. I must first remove the sand from my own eye so I can clearly see how to help remove the speck from another’s eye.

wp229 log eye 20190615_143248On the other end I see another set of “eyes,” but one of them is just a pucker, as if squinted closed. God, how do I perceive Your depth without both eyes wide open?

wp229 wrapped log 20190615_143019Seaweed encircles a log, clasped shut like a necklace. I must allow myself to be embraced by beauty, by God.

wp229 giraffe wood 20190615_142711I pass a trunk that looks pocked, wounded. God, heal what disfigures me.

wp229 stick, holes 20190615_143450Near it, a smooth stick rests against hole-ridden sand. Beach creatures have probably dug these holes to breathe, eat or hide. How do I find holy ground? How do I breathe the breath of Spirit?

wp229 driftwood piece 20190615_143540A small piece of driftwood has been carved by wind and water. What parts of myself need to be carved away and sent adrift?

wp229 wood w popper 20190615_143513As I pass a seaweed pod, I feel its aloneness on the vastness of the beach. And yet, I am never alone.

wp229 cave logs 20190615_143113Friends, family, neighbors, God—they are all with me, supporting me through thick and thin. Holding me up.

Trunks

wp203 2 trunks w daisy, purpleI glanced down to see the bottom of a tree trunk encircled in a profusion of tiny yellow daisies, and another complemented at its base with purple companion plants. I decided to focus my camera and my mind on the place where a tree’s foundational support meets the soil. A mystery of root webs concealed from view keeps the trees grounded and nourished. I must remain rooted in God for balance, support and nourishment.

wp203 2 trunks w holesOther trunks let a few of their roots show, displaying their connection to the earth. Lord, let me know the right times to publicly demonstrate my devotion to You, and when to allow its intuitive interpretation.

wp203 joined trunkI passed a tree’s base that was split, yet intertwined. When I differ in opinion with another, let me remember our greater bond of oneness, inextricably uniting us.

wp203 2 trunks red, twinsDiverse color and texture abounded: peeling, paper-thin rusty orange bark, gray lichen-encrusted trunks, even young bark that was red on one side and olive-gold on the other. We may look different on the outside, but our life-sustaining “sap” still comes from the same Wellspring.

wp203 red twigsLastly, I zeroed in on a large tree’s undulating bark. It flowed down vertically in rivulets of green-tinted gray over a reddish-brown backdrop. A single eye had formed where a branch had been severed. The healed wound offered insight: We are all in the flow. We can fight it and seek to drag ourselves to dry land or we can float effortlessly to The Source and join all others who have gathered there for fellowship. I choose the easy channel to companionship.

What the Plants Say

wp171 2 landscape layersWhat do the plants have to say today? Come hither are the first words I hear. I am layer upon layer of color, texture, beauty, just like you. Me? Yes, you.

wp171 2 balloon flowersWe prostrate ourselves. Why? Reverence for our creator.

wp171 2 calla, spike leavesLook closer. Impressions are left upon our tender selves. Understand that you leave impressions on others.

wp171 2 fuchsia, money plantLose yourself in the twirl as the dervish do. Spin on your center and you will never fall. Be transparent.

wp171 poppies, purplePractice joy. Practice it? Yes, joy is intentional.

wp171 2 pine, rhodieHave a solid core. My faith? Yes. Have faith that your strength can bear the weight of your beauty. This is true for all souls.

wp171 2 alstromeria, columbineMake a joyful sound with your voice—sing! The vibration from your vocal chords—your breath—heals creation. Let go! Let glory be!
