Listening for Divine Wisdom

wp373 01 sink 20220308 1200What do a sink, a buoy and a caterpillar have in common? Good question. Perhaps we’ll discover more as we listen.

Bathroom sink: I provide water with the touch of a handle. The Water of Life is just as easy to access, simply turn your attention to The Divine. wp373 02 buoy from boat 20220328 1200
Buoy with napping seals: Come to me and I will give you rest if you feel worn out by swimming in choppy seas. wp373 03 tiger moth caterpillar 20220330 1200

The Chair

wp360 01 chair w clouds 20211229 1200This chair is both word- and image-worthy. I have written about it and photographed it many times. Because the chair is perfectly designed and perfectly placed.wp360 02 puddle w chair 20211229 1200
Even the puddle leading up to the stalwart chair reflects the sky and clouds as if warning me of a celestial experience ahead. wp360 03 inner chair w view 20211229 1200
Prior to sitting down, I crouch before the behemoth and look through a triangle of space framing the ocean and sky: a world within a world. wp360 04 chair seat1 20211229 1200
I have four choices — for this is a magical, quadruple chair — each seat facing a different direction. Should I face east? I don’t want to disturb the rocks already stationed there.
wp360 05 chair seat2 20211229 1200Should I face south?
wp360 06 cloud vista3 20211229 1200Hmm… it is quite lovely.
wp360 07 chair seat3 20211229 1200What about north, from whence the cold winds blow? wp360 08 cloud vista2 20211229 1200
I choose west. Sitting here, I feel I am part of the great Pacific, surrounded by the pounding, frothing ocean. Encircled by terns, ravens, gulls and the occasional low-flying turkey vulture with its ivory-tipped beak breaking through the powerful wind. At times I have felt the push of air on my face from its huge, multi-toned brown wings. wp360 09 cloud vista1 20211229 1200
I could stay here for hours communing with God and nature, feeling the clouds descend from above, the waves churn up from below — a contemplative sandwich. wp360 10 dog prints 20211229 1200
But daily life calls — it’s time to feed and walk the dog. And in that, too, I experience God.

Lost and Found

wp285 01 furry keychain on tree 20200613Do you ever feel lost? When something—like this furry keychain—is lost in the woods, a passing hiker will put it in a prominent place to be more easily found.

wp285 02 bee in white thistle 20200613Instead of burying my head in the proverbial sand,

wp285 03 curled banana slug 20200613or curling up into a ball to mope,

wp285 05 wood squares decay 20200613Feeling broken doesn’t have to be eternal.

wp285 06 charcoal bark skull 20200613I can express my dark feelings safely, perhaps through art or writing, then let them go.

Dancing Leaves I

wp245 01 2 leaves w screw 20190915Leaves are falling.

wp245 02 1 pale green leaf 20190915Singly.

wp245 03 2 leaves, skeletal 20190915Doubly.

wp245 04 3 leaves w fern imprint 20190915In triplets.

wp245 05 tree in river 20190915Or myriads.

wp245 06 1 skinny leaf 1 20190915Each leaf dances as it falls. One curves and swirls.

wp245 07 leaf w ferns 1 20190915Another sails and gently rocks, wafting down to rest upon the first surface it meets.

wp245 08 1 yellow leaf 20190915I watch a narrow leaf plummet like a diver. Instead of plunging stem first into the river below, it hits a wooden bridge and stops. Its respite is precarious—one gust of wind will send it off the edge.

wp245 09 1 leaf w knot toungue 20190915A rust-colored leaf is bent in upon itself on one side causing it to twirl downwards like a screw. It lands on a wood railing whose knot looks like an eye. The leaf meets they eye’s inscrutable gaze. What transpires is a mystery.

wp245 10 6 leaves 20190915The dancers congregate, communicate, disintegrate as they move to the next stage of their lives: duff, detritus, rich loam for the next generation.

Wood Wisdom

wp229 red wood 20190615_142907I have never seen wood look so red in the wild. I jump across the stream that enters the beach as a trickling waterfall dropping off the headlands. The water is absolutely clear. I am grateful for that which is still pristine.

wp229 wood w kelp O 20190615_143257A bulb kelp presented on a painterly log resembles a snake eating its tail. It creates a never-ending loop. God, how do I become whole? How do I touch Your Infinity without being consumed?

wp229 ochre stone w wood 20190615_142827An ochre stone rests in the groove of driftwood. Help me, God, to rest in Your everlasting arms.

wp229 log eyes 2 20190615_143329I come across a washed-up tree trunk. On one end I see two “eyes,” one of which is covered by sand. I must first remove the sand from my own eye so I can clearly see how to help remove the speck from another’s eye.

wp229 log eye 20190615_143248On the other end I see another set of “eyes,” but one of them is just a pucker, as if squinted closed. God, how do I perceive Your depth without both eyes wide open?

wp229 wrapped log 20190615_143019Seaweed encircles a log, clasped shut like a necklace. I must allow myself to be embraced by beauty, by God.

wp229 giraffe wood 20190615_142711I pass a trunk that looks pocked, wounded. God, heal what disfigures me.

wp229 stick, holes 20190615_143450Near it, a smooth stick rests against hole-ridden sand. Beach creatures have probably dug these holes to breathe, eat or hide. How do I find holy ground? How do I breathe the breath of Spirit?

wp229 driftwood piece 20190615_143540A small piece of driftwood has been carved by wind and water. What parts of myself need to be carved away and sent adrift?

wp229 wood w popper 20190615_143513As I pass a seaweed pod, I feel its aloneness on the vastness of the beach. And yet, I am never alone.

wp229 cave logs 20190615_143113Friends, family, neighbors, God—they are all with me, supporting me through thick and thin. Holding me up.

Marvelous Memory Walks

wp188 stump w seaweed scarfHave you ever had to take a walk—due to physical injury or illness—solely in your mind? I have. In fact, I’m doing it right now. I’m remembering a walk I took with my sister back in July.

wp188 crab shellWe were hiking the Mendocino headlands one minute, then winding our way down a steep path to a beach cove the next.

wp188 2 kelp, flower pasted on rockThere we were greeted by a seaweed-swathed post, pointing out wonders to behold: a cracked crab shell bespeckled with barnacles, driftwood decorated with fine fringe and ocean-smoothed stones pasted with pretty petals.

wp188 charred knotty logWe separated, each drawn to marvels that called to us like sirens. A charred knotty log told tales of midnight fires under black, star-studded skies.

wp188 charcoal feathered logA wooden “wing” reminisced about its flight from the forest and long travels at sea. Wild waves from a Pacific storm brought it to rest in this quiet cove.

wp188 2 wood grainsA massive trunk showed me its grain “fingerprints” that distinguish it from every other tree in existence. Only God can read the topographically textured map of its life and know its essence.

wp188 mussels in sandMy sister and I joined up again and she showed me a myriad of mussels that resembled small footprints in the sand. It was time to create our own footprints back up the trail. Once we reached the top and looked over the cliff, the entire beach seemed small. Yet we knew it contained the vastness of God’s creation, even in one grain of sand.

Back Alley

wp183 2 flowersThe walk didn’t start in a back alley. I was exploring an unfamiliar part of town while my car was in the shop. I meandered down a street, taking in flowers hanging pendulously over fences.

wp183 naked lilyThe fences became higher, tighter and more keep-out-ish. A resurrection lily poked its head around the corner as if to say with a wink: Life is still thriving behind closed doors.

wp183 2 doors w platesSoon I could only see through a few cut holes. Then even the holes were covered over with metal plates. I was now officially in an alley.

wp183 2 red latchesVegetation sprawled against the doors, their peeling paint almost worn away.

wp183 2full doors w weedsLichen created a textured patina on the weathered planks; locks made me feel like a trespasser.

wp183 2 washing machine, carAn old appliance stood like a sentinel, watching my every move. A car seemed as if had been parked and forgotten: weeds grew around its tires.

wp183 truck with plate blurredA vintage truck faced me, headlights staring. Everything in the alley exuded a rough-hewn charm, but was also slightly menacing. Was I welcome or not?

wp183 blue w red latchesJust then I passed a sky-blue garage with large, double wooden doors. I felt more at ease. The red spray-painted latches appeared almost festive. A car turned into the alley, approaching me. I moved aside. An elderly woman with coiffed white hair and trembling lipstick smiled and waved as she passed. I was welcome, after all.

Happy Trails

wp155 purple seaweedI walked on the Fox River Trail in Aurora, Illinois for twenty years. I even wrote a book about it. There were no exotic bouquets of seaweed along the shore, but there were other attractions. One was my trail friend, Jim, who made it his habit to walk eight miles a day along the path.

wp155 snail, urchinAs far as our need to walk, we were like two peas in a pod—or perhaps more like a snail and a sea urchin. I liked to slowly savor the flora around me, while Jim often felt prickled and needed to tease out the knot of his emotional state with verbal processing. He was constantly wrestling with the big questions of life; we spent most of our time discussing philosophy and spirituality.

wp155 mussel, coral copyHis exterior was like a hard mussel shell, tightly sealed. But when he opened himself up, he revealed the delicate nature of his inner life. There were many subtle sides to Jim, as there are to each of us.

wp155 wood w colorI just learned Jim died. A birthday card I sent him was returned, and I immediately knew the reason why. He was not the kind of man who would leave his little home on the Fox River for anything but death.

As I walk new paths here in California, I think of him and our twenty years of friendship. I’m glad his spiritual questions are finally answered. Happy trails, Jim…
