Good things come in threes, and the triple waterfalls of the McCloud River in Siskiyou County were no exception. ![wp400 02 Lfalls far 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-02-lfalls-far-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
The lower falls were small, but pretty. In their defense, my husband and I visited in autumn when the river is at its lowest. ![wp400 03 Lfalls rapids 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-03-lfalls-rapids-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
Had we been there in spring, when glaciers and snow melt from the top of Mount Shasta, we were sure the flow would have been much more dramatic. ![wp400 04 Lfalls pear pool 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-04-lfalls-pear-pool-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
In fact, we could see pools ![wp400 05 Lfalls holes 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-05-lfalls-holes-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
and holes made from years of rushing water. ![wp400 06 Mfalls ponderosa pine 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-06-mfalls-ponderosa-pine-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
We hiked uphill to the next stop, passing enormous ponderosa pines ![wp400 07 Mfalls umbrella plant 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-07-mfalls-umbrella-plant-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
and bunches of umbrella plants growing in and around the water. ![wp400 08 Mfalls falls 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-08-mfalls-falls-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
The middle falls were beautiful and stretched across the entire width of the river. ![wp400 09 Mfalls rocks, trunks 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-09-mfalls-rocks-trunks-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
I scrambled down into the riverbed to explore ![wp400 10 Mfalls grass 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-10-mfalls-grass-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
and discovered a sacredness there, like being cradled in a holy womb. ![wp400 11 Mfalls from above 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-11-mfalls-from-above-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
I found it difficult to leave that place, bathed in its comforting glory, but continued ever upward, which gave me the unexpected joy of viewing Middle Falls from above. ![wp400 12 Ufalls falls 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-12-ufalls-falls-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
Naturally, we had high hopes for the upper falls, imagining the waterfalls to be increasingly spectacular. There is an idea instilled in us that the most difficult things reap the greatest rewards. ![wp400 13 Ufalls from above 20221004 1200](https://sondrasula.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/wp400-13-ufalls-from-above-20221004-1200.jpg?w=580)
But that idea doesn’t take grace into account. The middle falls ended up being the loveliest — perhaps because that was where I was simply resting within God, doing nothing to accrue favor.
