The Geometry of God

wp354 01 snail w red ice plant 20211116 1200I was noticing spirals. In a snail shell. wp354 02 spiral sky 20211116 1200
In the sky. wp354 03 3 snails 20211116 1200jpg
Spirals within spirals: a trinity. wp354 04 green rocks 20211116 1200
Then I saw lines crisscrossing, wp354 05 orange veined rock 20211116 1200
moving haphazardly. wp354 06 2 yellow w ice plant 1200
Was there a pattern to grasp on to? wp354 07 white sun 20211116 1200
Or did randomness reign? wp354 08 yellow daisy 20211116 1200
Then came the circles: wp354 09 lavendar ice plant 20211116 1200
fringed, wp354 10 red berries 20211116 1200
spherical, wp354 11 group of puffs 20211116 1200
bursting like botanical fireworks. wp354 12 red ice plant 20211116 1200
As humans we’re wired to search for meaning. wp354 13 sand river w rock 20211116 1200
As spiritual beings we inevitably find it: In geometry, the earth, the sky – God is always present.

The Fair Pacific

wp327 01 single ice on sand 20210409 1200I was feeling a little down, but knew the headlands trail by Pudding Creek would be bursting with flowers wp327 02 2 floral pudding field 20210409 1200
carpeting the earth’s floor, and that vision would lift my spirits. wp327 03 ice plant field 20210409 1200
Not only were the blooms spectacular, wp327 04 cove near pudding 20210409 1200
the Pacific was a sight to behold. Once when asked to pick one adjective to describe the ocean I chose “fair” as in unbiased. There is something about the ocean that doesn’t seem to side with life or death, encompassing all. wp327 05 stepping on ledge 20210409 1200
I took a step on a sea stack’s narrow path jutting out into the great blue fairness. At one point the path was less than a foot wide, and even though I could see it extended farther, I could not bring myself to take the next step. I looked into the froth below, knowing it would welcome me if I fell, but that its embrace would also be my last. It neither beckoned nor pushed away; it felt completely neutral. wp327 06 baby blue eyes field 20210409 1200
I turned on my heel and continued on through a sea of winking baby blue eyes and smiling buttercups. wp327 07 ochre point 20210409 1200
I came to another precipice which seemed friendly and safe. There was even a pillow-sized indentation in which to stand or sit. wp327 08 lone rock w abstract 20210409 1200
A single rock sat in the water. I felt its loneliness, but also felt its strength. Below, in the sand, seaweed created an abstract pattern. wp327 09 abstract seaweed, surf 20210409 1200
I noted the pattern made a rough circle even though the strands seemed to be going in different directions. This design could only be seen from above. wp327 10 pudding tunnel rock 20210409 1200
Heading back, I noticed a tunnel carved by water through a rock with waves passing through it. Everything passes through, I thought. wp327 11 wild radish field 20210409 1200
I followed the path onward to where I began the walk. wp327 12 puff wall flower field 20210409 1200
Even though I’m only passing through this life for a short time, I want to savor each moment of beauty I can grab ahold of because beauty gives me strength. And that seems like a fair exchange.

Gain

wp323 01 MK trail south w clouds 20210319 1200Today the clouds are screaming for attention—as they should—for they are glorious. I’m so busy looking up, I keep forgetting to notice rocks and roots in my path. But that’s okay. I haven’t fallen.
wp323 02 ice plants draped over cliff 20210319 1200I pass cliffs draped in ice plants. Pink and yellow blooms peep from fat, succulent leaves of emerald, red and plum. Beyond, the Pacific is roiling with white, sudsy surf. A storm appears to be brewing over the deep waters, but it will never reach land.wp323 03 white waves 20210319 1200
The sun plays hide-and-seek with clouds, creating odd atmospheric images: dark land, bright sea. I allow myself to surrender to the undulating unreality and enjoy its strangeness.wp323 04 seagull sitting 20210319 1200
A seagull rests on the very edge of a precipice. When you can fly, you needn’t worry about such dangers. wp323 05 3 seagull taking wing 20210319 1200
For you can always consider your options and then take wing. Is there a destination in mind, or is the flight enough in itself?wp323 06 mysterious cloud 20210319 1200
The clouds are now creating another spectacular show. A cumulous anvil presses the sky toward the sea in a stripe of slate blue.wp323 07 blowhole spewing 20210319 1200
I stop when I hear the splat, splat, splat of water falling onto hard rock after being thrust up through a blowhole. I walk over to a ledge overlooking the scene in order to watch. I feel like I am in the Theater of Nature, privy to many of its fleeting wonders.wp323 08 red ice plant w burn 20210319 1200
The sun is out again in full force. It highlights the flurry of lemon chiffon petals radiating wildly from a red-tipped ice plant. Though I know this plant is invasive, it is also beautiful, determined and beneficial when fighting erosion or threat of fire. None of us are all good or all bad; we each carry the seed of both, and water one more than the other.wp323 09 boardwalk w clouds 20210319 1200
I follow the boardwalk back to the car. When I listen attentively and look expectantly, I gain. I can’t pinpoint what it is that I gain, I only know it is somehow important, so I continue on.

Thar She Blows…Whale Mucus!

wp309 01 whale snot purple lump 20210118 1200I never thought I’d be rushing down to Virgin Beach to photograph the nasal secretions of whales, but there I was, scouring the sand at the edge of the tide line.wp309 02 whale snot w bubbles 20210118 1200
Less than twenty minutes earlier, I had attended a Zoom meeting in which a participant described walking along the beach with her marine biologist friend. She asked her friend why the clear jellyfish she was looking at didn’t appear to have any tentacles.wp309 03 whale snot w wood 20210118 1200
“Because it’s whale snot,” she replied.wp309 04 whale snot w sticks 20210118 1200
My fellow Zoomer exclaimed that in the forty-five years she’d been beachcombing, she’d never seen this phenomenon. Well, I didn’t have forty-five years to spare, so I grabbed my car keys and sped off towards the ever-amazing Pacific.wp309 05 whale snot w jellyfish 20210118 1200
When I arrived at the beach, I understood the confusion as I spotted a blob of mucus that had washed up next to a sea jelly. The faint purple threads on the jellyfish seemed to be its only distinguishing characteristic.wp309 06 my shadow at virgin creek 20210118 1200
I followed the “expulsions” to the mouth of Virgin Creek, stood there and marveled.wp309 07 under virgin creek 20210118 1200
All kinds of sea life intermixed in the brackish water, including long bulbs of kelp.wp309 08 2 SD in kelp 1200
Alongside the flowing water I noticed my former initials in the sand. That “sign” confirmed it was right for me to drop everything and immediately pursue this curiosity.wp309 09 jellyfish near whale snot 20210118 1200
Soon I was able to differentiate a jelly from nasal glop even at a distance.wp309 10 whale snot w mussel 20210118 1200
I pondered how expelling something we no longer need clears us for the days ahead. How it allows us to breathe more freely. wp309 11 ice plant at virgin creek 20210118 1200
And when that happens, we are ready to face the future with renewed courage, faith and hope.

Busyness: The Enemy of Wonder

wp303 01 ice plant vista1 20201122 copyI felt overwhelmed by day-to-day life and ashamed of that feeling since I have fewer responsibilities than the average person.

The New October

wp244 ice plant swathe 20191007Just a few years ago in Aurora, Illinois, October meant flaming sugar maples, frost-edged grass and chartreuse Osage oranges clinging to barren branches. But along the Mendocino coast it means flaming ice plants licking the edges of bluffs.

wp244 icing ice plant 20191007Or dripping down ocean rocks like lava icing.

wp244 praying mantis 20191007Pale praying mantises fly through the air, then land in fields as if gleaning.

wp244 driftwood tree 20191007Pines remain green. And acrobatic trunks, such as this one, endure each season as it passes, with little change.

wp244 puff flowers 20191007I feel closest to the flowers that bloom, then create winged seeds to float away on westerly winds. For they hold the promise of adventure and new perspectives before taking root in unfamiliar soil, where they will grow and expand, becoming fresh versions of themselves.

Seeing Stars

wp217 star best 20190316_124636As I moseyed down to the tidepools at MacKerricher State Park, I noted a young lovey-dovey couple pointing down at something near their feet. The old me would have been too shy to approach them, but the new me always puts curiosity over convention.

wp217 2 underwater snails, starfish“What did you find?” I asked them.

“A starfish!” they both exclaimed in unison. I didn’t have the heart to tell them marine scientists have replaced the name “starfish” with “sea star” since they are echinoderms, not fish.

wp217 starfish H 20190316_124321We soon parted ways and I discovered another sea star crawling along a rock. Its bright orange back mesmerized me. It’s difficult to conceive of these cute critters as powerful predators. But they are. Just ask any snail.

wp217 anenomies closed 20190316_123702I passed a group of pudgy globules with debris stuck to them: broken shells, pottery, pebbles and sea urchin spines. I soon realized they were closed-up sea anemones waiting for the tide to rise before reopening. What a unique disguise, I thought. Afterwards I conscientiously picked my way through the rocks, careful not to step on one inadvertently.

wp217 star V 20190316_124216I spied a bit of brilliant orange in the distance. I gingerly tiptoed to the spot. A fat sea star stood vertically against a rock, its seductive textured surface so tempting to touch. But I knew better—human touch can harm them.

Climbing a set of stairs back to the boardwalk above, I considered what I had learned from the tide pools: exposure creates intimacy. When we let “low tide” expose our vulnerabilities, we allow others to see the real us. And for that we all deserve gold stars.

Rock Beach

wp210 orange spongeI tiptoed over the precarious rocks, some of which slid under my feet. I was being called siren-like to an orange dot in the distance, which proved to be a sponge. As I traversed the uneven terrain, I considered the story of Persephone ending up in Hades due to her attraction to a beautiful narcissus. But when I got closer to the sponge, I saw a small rock embraced and sheltered by a much larger rock and was instead reminded of God’s love.

wp210 2 abalone w rocksBits of abalone shell tucked into the stones looked like precious jewels. That’s how we appear to God, I thought.

wp210 ginger-like kelpA ginger-like seaweed resembled a rough hand sans finger. I thought of all those who have lost parts of their bodies through genetic anomalies, surgeries, accidents, war. God still sees everyone as whole.

wp210 twisted purple root kelpA kelp bulb hung over a rock, its round purple-pink roots graduating to flat gold-olive streamers that twisted into a fat braid. No matter what our surface color is, we are intertwined and come from the same root.

wp210 2 jellyfish, kelpA jellyfish washed up on the beach reminded me how transparent we really are: God can see right through our makeshift walls.

wp210 pink kelpAnother kelp lay on a bed of sand. It was dressed in bright fuchsia complemented by a burst of green ribbon. Yet it still couldn’t shake its dark shadow. We all must face our own shadows because they accompany us into The Light. Observe, befriend and accept your shadow without judgment and you will understand Mercy.

wp210 lone rockFinally, a lone stone nestled into the curve of a boulder’s shoulder. I remembered the many times I had rested in God the way a child rests upon a parent’s chest or a lover rests upon their beloved. Whenever we are weary we are invited to rest within the love of God.
