Consulting with Creation

wp434 01 PC calla w cypress 20230516 1200There are times I need to consult with creation as well as with The Creator. Times when I need to ask the cypress trees and calla lilies what wisdom they can impart.
Cypress trees: We stand strong against wind and gale — and continue to grow ever taller, ever wider.
Calla lilies: We enjoy togetherness; completely alone we do not thrive. wp434 02 PC 4 tall grass seed heads 20230516 1200
Tall grass: Our stems may seem thin and weak, but that way strong winds may bend but don’t break us. wp434 03 PC yellow flower mound 20230516 1200
Yellow flowers on hill: Alone we seem insubstantial; together we conquer mountains. wp434 04 PC wild radish 20230516 1200
Wild radish: We bloom where we are nourished. wp434 05 PC yellow bush flower 20230516 1200
Yellow bush flower: We happily go our own way but know we are connected at the root. wp434 06 PC Douglas iris 20230516 1200
Douglas iris: Our petals reach upwards for inspiration — downwards to remain grounded. wp434 07 PC grass w ocean 20230516 1200
Grasses: When we stand up tall, our overall view increases. wp434 08 PC ice plant w pool 20230516 1200

California poppy: When rattlesnake grass surrounds me, I remain optimistic. wp434 10 PC yellow flower 20230516 1200
Yellow flowers: Although we are tattered and our edges are eaten away, we will continue to bloom for all we’re worth.

Dam Good Hiking

wp389 01 CPW dam purple flowers 20220714 copyAs the hiking trail planner for my husband’s break week vacation in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, I was responsible for deciding where we hiked each day. wp389 02 CPW dam lime lichen 20220714 copy
I would like to say I diligently planned this out prior to the night before each hike, but that would be a fib. wp389 03 CPW dam lake 20220714 copy
The expensive trail map, which we had to purchase again, even though I knew we had the same exact map at home (yet couldn’t find), showed the Tie Hack Dam and Reservoir as a possible decent choice. wp389 04 CPW dam lichen rock 20220714 copy
I was taking a chance because, (1), I knew the trail was lightly traveled and the trailhead potentially elusive; (2), there were multiple substantial climbs and descents; (3), I knew an adjoining trail allowed ATVs which might mar our ideal of quietude and serenity and (4), the only comment I could find about the trail read: navigate carefully, many opportunities to make a wrong turn. wp389 05 CPW dam dam 20220714 copy
We parked and walked down to the dam. wp389 06 CPW dam dam spillway 20220714 copy
Peering over the edge, we wondered if the trail began at the bottom, but it seemed to dead end. wp389 07 CPW dam rock w quartz 20220714 copy
After we crossed the dam, we saw a path above some sheer rocks. To me it looked dangerous and almost impossible to climb up to the path; to Rob it looked like the potential trailhead. We have a history of differing thoughts about trails: I tend to think the easiest way is the right way, Rob tends to think the most difficult way is the right way.
I won out this time and we ended up walking back to the parking lot where we found the actual trailhead hidden behind some trees. wp389 08 CPW dam log bridge 20220714 copy
The path went up and down until it reached the spillway at the bottom of the dam where we once again disagreed about the path’s direction. This time our roles were reversed: I thought we had to cross a treacherous narrow log to continue; Rob thought the trail paralleled the side of the stream. wp389 09 CPW dam cairn 20220714 copy
As we scanned the area, we both noticed a cairn — across the stream. I trembled and prayed the entire way across because the water was cold and moving faster than I expected and I knew I would be hurt if I fell in. At one point my hiking pole gave way into some rotten wood and I — like a Weeble — wobbled, but didn’t fall down. Rob, on the other hand, confidently walked across in less than a minute. wp389 10 CPW dam ridge over spillway 20220714 copy
Not only did the hike end up being gorgeous, wp389 11 CPW dam from ridge 20220714 copy
passing through a variety of terrains, wp389 12 CPW dam creek 20220714 copy
but we didn’t see a single soul until we reached our turnaround point at the opposite end of the reservoir. wp389 13 CPW dam lake end path 20220714 copy
We basked in quietude and serenity after all. wp389 14 CPW dam 3 rocks 20220714 copy
And we didn’t get lost, either.

Beach Cove Questions

wp348 01 jellyfish vert 20211005 1200Many of the beaches in northern California are small rocky coves that can be walked end to end in several minutes — if one doesn’t get sidetracked by globular sea jellies wp348 02 stone beach1 20211005 1200
interesting stones wp348 03 boat piece 20211005 1200
or debris from battered boats. wp348 04 beach vista 20211005 1200
Which, of course, I do. wp348 05 rock w 2 holes 20211005 1200
How could I not stop when I pass a large stone with two perfectly round holes in it? What made the holes? wp348 06 jellyfish horiz 20211005 1200
Or crouch down to inspect a jellyfish pillow tucked into a crevice? Do sea jellies think and feel? And if so, what do they think about? How do they feel? wp348 07 flat rock on stony beach 20211005 1200
When I’m this close to the ground wonders multiply. Sea palm roots mix with ribbon seaweed, smooth stones and wet feathers. Every world contains another world. How many worlds do I contain? wp348 08 gray stone beach 20211005 1200
The stones come in so many sizes. What type of stone am I? Cumbersome and hard to roll? Oblong and palm-sized? Smooth and pocket-ready to soothe away worry? Or am I an idiosyncratic conglomerate patched together to become whole? wp348 09 deer on outcrop 20211005 1200
When I climb the path back up from the beach, I see three deer looking at me. How do they see me? As a threatening, benign or friendly presence? How do I want to appear? wp348 10 rock w lichen 20211005 1200
On my way back to the car I also pass a rock engulfed in lichen. To grow, must I sacrifice part of myself? And as I grow deeper into God, does my old self recede and transform into something new? I hope so.

Willing to Listen

wp340 01 beetle w bee, ant 20210702 1200Do you ever feel like a beetle carrying a deceased bee, being followed by an ant? I don’t, but I do like to imagine what it must be like to be any of those creatures, or even to be the sandstone on which they scurry. wp340 02 orange stone 20210702 1200
Part of hearing creation speak is being willing to listen. A conglomerate rock can tell me what it’s like to be embedded in a world close to my neighbors. Learning to Receive

wp304 01 Mac rock juts 20201206 1200Coves abound along the headlands of the Mendocino coast. Many can be accessed through somewhat treacherous means: scrambling down boulders or sliding in dirt grooves between tufts of grass.
wp304 02 Mac beach1 20201206 1200The tiny beaches can be rocky or smooth, filled with driftwood and seaweed or bereft of anything but smooth sand. wp304 03 Mac cairn w sky 20201206 1200
Choosing one such cove, my husband and I picked our way down. We knew we were on the right path due to a carefully constructed cairn. wp304 04 Mac rocks orange triangle 20201206 1200
Once at the bottom we separated, each drawn to spots that fascinated us. I discovered a triangular orange rock pushed up against a larger stone exhibiting traces of gray-green and rust. It seemed to be pointing me in a specific direction. I followed its prompting.wp304 05 Mac kelp tangle1 20201206 1200
I was led to a spaghetti tangle of kelp, shining ochre in the sunlight. What was this mass of squiggles trying to tell me? Even when your life is a mess, if you let The Flow back in — the cool ocean waters — it will untangle everything effortlessly.wp304 06 Mac driftwood 20201206 1200
Nearby a stubby driftwood log beckoned me. Your physical eyes see only so much. Open yourself to true vision and you will surely see into the eye of God.wp304 07 Mac kelp tangle2 20201206 1200
More kelp was heaped upon the beach, the bulbs torn from their home on the sea floor. When you feel you have been ripped from your foundation and from all you know — I am still here. I am your true home, wherever you are.wp304 08 Mac rocks brown bell 20201206 1200
I kept exploring because this cove was full of wisdom. I was drawn to a blood-orange and wine-hued rock surrounded by stones, sticks, shells, leaves and seaweed: a motley crew. Although we are different, we inhabit the same space and have grown accustomed to one another. We have learned to exist in harmony due to our proximity. Can you?

Though it felt strange to be chastised by a rock, I couldn’t help but be touched by the stark honesty of the question. I tentatively murmured: I can.wp304 09 Mac kelp bulb 20201206 1200jpg
The last object I encountered was a vase-shaped bulb of kelp. If you are willing to open to the spiritual insight surrounding you, you will be filled. Learn to receive.

I breathed in the salty air and rejoined my husband. I allowed him to help me over a tricky trickling creek, which I would normally have tried to traverse on my own. After climbing back up to the trail, we meandered back to the car, hand in hand.

Plant Wisdom

wp283 01 mauve scotch broom1 20200515What message do the plants have to impart today? I say today because they are constantly communicating with me, in subtle or overt ways. This Scotch broom asks me: Do you know why we are this amazing color, when most of us are plain yellow? Cross-pollination. The mixing of our gene pool creates beauty untold.

wp283 02 hens chicks w ice plant 20200508The succulents: Praise be! We raise ourselves up in joy to greet each new day.

wp283 03 wild radish lavendar 20200508Wild radish: The patterns on our petals resemble feathered angel wings. Know that you are surrounded at all times with goodness; we are cheering for you.

wp283 04 salmon ice plant 20200508Ice plant bloom: The Center is where things are happening. My delicate fringe will fall, but my center will become fruit and seed—nourishment and progeny.

wp283 05 red ice plant 20200508Rock-clinging plants: We hold fast to our Foundation, even when the ground shifts below us.

wp283 06 2 flower, beeWhite-edged flower: Little though I am, the bee still finds its way to me.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety-Jig

wp272 01 calla w ferns 20200424Most of us are only leaving our homes to go to the market and then home again, home again, jiggety-jig. After one market trip I pulled into our driveway, parked and unloaded the groceries, as usual. But this time I went back outside because I had caught sight of a single, exquisite calla lily shaded by ferns. I thought it had gone the way of all the other callas I had planted—a few struggling leaves emerging in spring and then quickly dying. I was pleased to see a post-Easter resurrection.

wp272 02 lily encircled w camillias 20200403The day lilies looked healthy too, surrounded by a ring of fallen camellia blossoms. The lilies had diminished in size each year as well, until I transplanted them to a new location a few months ago.

wp272 03 apple blossoms 20200419The two remaining branches of our apple tree were blooming. A hungry, pregnant doe had broken most of them last fall when she had tried to balance her front hooves on the trunk and had stripped the uppermost branches with her strong teeth. Although I caught her red-hoofed, she appeared defiant and ignored my shooing.

wp272 04 crocosmia leaves w petrified wood 20200419Crocosmia had shot up sword-like leaves amid a display of petrified wood. They are one of the few flowers in our yard that do not have to be babied and offer a spray of brilliant orange. Because orange stands out so well against green, it is my favorite garden color.

wp272 05 koi statuary 20200403Since we don’t have a real koi pond, this sculpture makes a great stand-in. I love koi because they are affectionate and like to be petted. Koi are on the short list of aquatic creatures who have nuzzled my hand to be petted, along with tiger sharks and bat rays.

wp272 06 pear blossoms 20200419In the previous blog I mentioned a bear that had enjoyed itself at the expense of our pear tree. But this same tree had also nearly fallen over due to the strong western winds that blow in off the Pacific. The pear has been through a lot although you’d never know it by just looking at its lovely blossoms.

wp272 07 salal w fur 20200419Fuzzy salal flowers tickled my toes. Their rouge-colored stems echo their roots, which are strong and tenacious despite their deceptively delicate pink hue.

wp272 08 quince blossoms 20200419A blush of quince blossoms crowded along the branches of our large bush. This is one plant no animal will disturb, even when large yellow pear-shaped fruit ripen and spread enticing aromas throughout the yard. Most humans ignore the fruit as well since it’s difficult to process and can’t be eaten raw.

wp272 09 red berries 20200419I was surprised to see a couple of residual red berries on a bush below the deck. Having spent most of my life east of the Rockies, berries equal autumn. But the manzanitas are already producing berries too. I periodically forget in what a unique microclimate I now live.

wp272 10 sparaxis-harlequin flower 20200419As I was about to go back inside, I passed by the vivid petals of the Sparaxis, or harlequin flower. For many Midwest winters, I had pined for this beauty when I saw it on the pages of nursery catalogs, but being a South African native, it is only hardy in zones 9-10. I had forgotten all about it when I spied it blooming in my mother’s garden last fall. I knew right then it had a chance of survival in my own, and she happily shared her bounty. It is decidedly thriving.

Almost all of these plants carry stories of survival. Let’s glean from them what we can, and bloom where we’re rooted these days: at home.
