The Role of Flowers

wp473 01 BG camellia path 20240228 800.jpgYears ago I was “made to understand” that I would walk The Path of Flowers and I believe I have.wp473 02 BG rhodie w bumble 20240228 800.jpg
I now live in a place where something is always flowering. wp473 03 BG narcissus 20240228 800
Through any pain I experience there is also the beauty of blooms to cheer me. wp473 04 BG red camellia 20240228 800.jpg
Flowers are sent to those who are ill or suffering. wp473 05 BG hot pink rhodie 20240228 800.jpg
They are used for celebrations wp473 06 BG hyacynth 20240228 800.jpg
or to honor those who have passed away. wp473 07 BG hellebores 20240228 800.jpg
The Lenten rose is named after a time in the Christian liturgical calendar that precedes Easter. wp473 08 BG med pink camellia 20240228 800.jpg
Many people are even named after flowers, my nieces and sister included. wp473 09 BG magnolia crown 20240228 800.jpg
Quaker George Fox famously said to walk cheerfully over the earth, answering that of God in everyone. wp473 10 BG trunks w camellia 20240228 800.jpg
Flowers seem to “walk” everywhere, bringing joy to any who encounter them. Dare we do the same?

Tranquility Amidst Stress

wp467 01 BG bottle brush silo 20240130 800Tranquility can be hard to come by when I’m stressed. wp467 02 BG fallen camellia 20240130 800
This week was a doozy. wp467 03 BG succulents 20240130 800
Big storms. wp467 04 blackberry behind wire silo 20240130 800
No electricity for days, and then finally a text from the electric company saying it would be fixed by 6 p.m. wp467 05 BG spiky palm-like 20240130 800
At 6:05 p.m. that estimate was changed to five days later at 10 p.m.! wp467 06 BG magnolia bud 20240130 800
Fortunately, they were able to fix it much sooner. wp467 07 BG yucca-like 20240130 800
Large, medium and small trees fell in the yard, not to mention cracked limbs and smaller branches. wp467 08 BG calla w pond 20240130 800
I prayed during the storm, asking angels to “direct” the inevitable downed trees away from structures, and every tree fell in a different direction — north, south, east and west — missing buildings and fences, some by an inch or two. wp467 09 BG heathers 20240130 800
Even a small portion of our road collapsed. wp467 10 BG red hot pokers 20240130 800
Then last evening our dog, Remy, got skunked inside his enclosure, which required immediate attention, messy baths and now our entire house smells like a skunk. wp467 11 BG open magnolia 20240130 800
Even so, the thoughts of angels watching, flowers blooming and plants growing still comfort me.

We Matter

wp421 01 BG footsteps of spring 20230308 1200Footsteps Of Spring flowers are low-to-the-ground blooms that often create a patchy trail. Their yellow path prompts me to imagine Jesus leaving footprints of light where he walks.wp421 02 BG striped yucca-like 20230308 1200

Shelter In Place

wp265 01 20200305 magnolia 1Due to the COVID-19 virus, I am advised to “shelter in place,” only leaving our home for necessities, like toilet paper, which has been absent from market shelves for weeks now.

wp265 02 20200305 magnolia 2The magnolia is stuck in the same position as I am. It can’t go anywhere.

wp265 03 20200305 magnolia 3This particular magnolia lives tucked into a tiny corner—it can only branch out in one direction.

wp265 04 20200305 magnolia 4But it can bloom. Right where it is. Cramped in its tiny space.

wp265 05 20200305 magnolia 5A look into its center shows its surprising complexity—perhaps it’s time to delve inside my center. To discover what constitutes the seed of who I am.

wp265 06 20200305 magnolia 6To realize I am blooming today. Right now.

wp265 07 20200305 magnolia 7This way, come what may, I have no regrets.

Come Sit with Me

wp215 wood benchCome sit with me. This bench was made for two.

wp215 fava bean flowersTake in the delicate curves of the fava bean bloom; its exquisite veining. A masterpiece in black and white.

wp215 2 magnolia, lunariaJoin me in the magnolia grove where hairy, colorless buds burst into brilliant bloom.

As we round the corner, money plants brush against our legs. From bloom to seed, they mesmerize.

wp215 2 pink flower clustersSmall pink waterfalls cascade down to lush emerald foliage. Drink in the sight.

wp215 2 bud, fern yellowA picoted bud is just beginning its cycle, while right next door a fern leaf is ending its cycle. Beauty before me, beauty behind me… comes to mind from an old Navajo prayer.

wp215 2 callasOne calla lily boasts perfection, the other, while torn and ragged, possesses a beauty all its own. Beauty all around me—around us.

wp215 2 urchin, shroomOur journey is about to end. But not the way it has for this sea urchin. Like the neighboring mushroom whose spores continue its journey, ours begins anew each time we open our eyes to wonder.

Botanical Reflections

wp214 2 petals in poolsWhether I ponder with eyes aloft or downcast, my field of vision is inundated with flowers.

wp214 daffodil bendingFrom the slender, graceful jonquil…

wp214 red hot pokersto the stand-tall red hot poker, my world is awash with color. We are all brilliant.

wp214 2 pine cone, magnoliaEven the toned-down flora draws me into its embrace. A pine cone titillates my senses with its preposterous texture and teetering, topsy-turvy “tentacles.” White magnolias with excessive, fluttering petals create an air of sumptuousness. We are all multifaceted.

wp214 white magnolia treeAround the corner the same tree—a white magnolia—showcases stark minimalism with its leafless branches and smooth gray trunk. Stripped down to our core, we are all still beautiful and loved magnificently.

wp214 2 iris, azaeliaI thrill to the frills of a ruffled iris and to the undulating edges of azalea blooms. Our Creator is delighted by the complex curlicues that make us US.

How do I know? The flowers told me so.

Spring Close-Up

wp213 purple lantern, peaSpring lets us in on her secrets. They are the same the world over. Rebirth. Renewal. Hope. But what do the individual flowers say?

wp213 2 white lanterns, magnoliaThe waxy lanterns of the andromeda shrub remind me that my light shines from within. A white magnolia offers the same wisdom as it virtually glows against the darkness.

wp213 2 pink rhodie, green bellsA rhododendron bloom blurts out joy like a noisemaker at a child’s birthday party. A wine-edged hellebore bows in reverence as it blooms. I can follow their lead and do both.

wp213 chartreuse bractsTwin euphorbia bracts reveal their artistry as I delve inside their protective outer layer. Showing my vulnerability doesn’t illicit disdain as I once imagined, but actually increases my preciousness in the eyes of others.

wp213 2 purple, forget-meThis purple flower appears to be inside-out. When I wear my heart on my sleeve, everyone can see my truth at a glance.

A forget-me-not ages without apology: purple, blue, then gray. When I was a child I thought and acted as a child; but is it time to put away childish things and accept who I now am?

wp213 2 yellow verbascumCheery yellow posies invite me to look on the sunny side of life.

wp213 2 white magnolia, lilac trumpetWhen I want to truly commune with The Divine, I don’t just remain on the surface, but dig deeply into the center of mystery as these tantalizing blooms illustrate.

wp213 2 viola, pine cone budSymmetry is overrated. As you can see from this whiskered viola, the subtle imperfections create a wabi-sabi beauty. And the fissures in a developing pine cone may mar its perfection, but allow it to eventually break out of its gummy constraints and grow.

wp213 2 sweet pea; fuchsiaFinally, a sweet pea and fuchsia open themselves to the world without holding back. Will I dare do the same?

Spring in February

wp209 red camelias by trunkI’m still tickled by the thought of spring in February. What used to be the most desolate time of the year for me is now the most promising. A change of location has caused a change in mindset. About what else can I change my mind?

wp209 white leaves 20180201_142616Flora litter doesn’t seem like litter at all—not only is it decorative, but it nourishes the soil for future growth. Is there fertile litter in my life that I need to let lie fallow for a time?

wp209 2 camelias pink, whiteBlooms can look prettier together—they make more impact. Although I love my solitude, spending time with another can be doubly beneficial.

wp209 pink tips 20180201_142836Backlit blossoms and leaves draw me closer with their wonder-filled glow. When I let The Light shine through me rather than on me, ego steps aside and allows for deeper, more fulfilling interactions.

wp209 magnolias 20180201_141537I’m often amazed how hard a tree will work to reach toward the heavens. I believe in grace, but I also believe that effort often produces wild spurts of spiritual growth.

wp209 red camelia 20180214_132734The filaments of a camellia stand tall, holding their pollen-heavy anthers up to attract bees and other pollinators. When I offer up spiritual food for passersby to partake of, I can contribute to nourishing souls.
