Grounding Yourself During the Holidays

wp461 01 BG Headless Harmony 20231128 800Sometimes we lose our heads during the holidays. wp461 02 BG tree twists 20231128 800

Let There Be Lights

wp455 01 purple lights on tree 20231031 1200A fierce debate often ensues when one person believes Christmas lights should be hung the moment the last trick-or-treaters leave their abode and another person believes the stroke of midnight on November 30th is the earliest possible date any form of holiday decoration is allowable. wp455 02 lighted path 20231031 1200
I pondered this as I recently walked among the holiday lights at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. wp455 03 green lights on trellace 20231031 1200
Personally, I have never put up outdoor lights — perhaps because I spent almost twenty years renting and it just wasn’t “my territory.” wp455 04 blue trunk 20231031 1200
However, I do put up a Christmas tree that remains decorated until spring, most years. wp455 05 yellow lights in greenery 20231031 1200
The lights are so comforting, so enthralling, so enchanting, that I can’t seem to take the tree down (um, yes, it is artificial). wp455 06 yellow lights under leaves 20231031 1200
Even though I can be a Grinch at times, I don’t want to rob anyone of the wonderful feeling lights give me and potentially give others. wp455 07 purple lights on branch 20231031 1200
So, no matter what time of year it may be, let there be lights!

Musings on Mary, Joseph and Jesus

wp357 01 rock in sand river 20211116 copyToday is Christmas Eve. This week I’ve been thinking about Joseph, Mary and the Christ child making their long trek for the census — to be counted. Do I count? How far am I willing to go to be counted? wp357 02 sea palm couple 20211116 copy
They journeyed together — linked — part of one another. How much work am I willing to put in to be continually linked to my partner? wp357 03 fat kelp bulb 20211116 copy
Mary was ripe with child, bursting to give birth to The Light of the World. Am I willing to beget light, even if the process is painful? wp357 04 2 seaweed pods 20211116 copy
When they arrived at their destination, they were turned away because there was no room for them. No place to stay. When I am rejected, do I give up or keep trying? wp357 05 mussel half 20211116 copy
Someone was kind enough to offer a stable. Not a true crib, but they made do. Do I make do with what I have, or do I always feel the need for more? wp357 06 sea grass 20211116 copy
They gathered some grass, straw, whatever was at hand. Necessity — the mother of invention. Do I find creative ways to deal with not-so-great circumstances? wp357 07 rock w rivulet 20211116 copy
Mary’s water broke, and soon came Jesus. Before long Jesus would be thrown into the water and be expected to swim. How do I react when I’m forced into a situation before I think I’m ready? Do I struggle or accept? Do I go with the flow? wp357 08 sea palm stripped 20211116 copy
Even though the umbilical cord was severed, Christ’s connection to his mother was unbreakable. Do I allow events to weaken bonds between me and those I love? wp357 09 rocky shore vista 20211116 copy
Joseph, Mary and Jesus eventually made their way back home where they each fulfilled their destinies. Am I willing to fulfill mine?

The Wise Gifts of Christmas

wp305 01 GB green glass 20201109 copyChristmas gifts can be anything you perceive them to be: frankincense, the sounds of drumming, a walk on Glass Beach…wp305 02 GB glass pearl 20201109 copy
A perfect glass pearl glows among the stones reminding me of the wise ones who brought precious presents to a tiny baby in a manger so long ago. Would the Christ child have enjoyed playing with nature’s marble? wp305 03 GB glass w ocean 20201109 copy

Once the wise men began their journey, they entered into the unknown, following nothing but a star and hearsay.wp305 06 GB brown ceramic 20201109 copy

Christmas Ornament Stories

wp253 01 grape orn 20191223For many of us, Christmas trees are a place to hang our memories, and I’m no exception. I now live in Wine Country where vineyards are just a hop, skip and jump away.

wp253 02 2 mom's, flamingoBut let’s back up to one of my first ornaments given to me by my mother: a simple twist of color. This was my prized piece, the central focus of my Christmas tree. But one year the entire tree fell over and it smashed to bits. When I told the sad tale to my sister, Cathy, she kindly sent me hers (along with a flamingo since she now lived in Florida). What I hadn’t known was that my mother had given one to each of us four girls.

wp253 03 2 frog, birdWhen I was a child, I was given a frog as a gift, and when others saw it, they surmised that I collected frogs. Soon I was up to my eyeballs in frogs and I inevitably fell in love with them. And the bird ornament was one of the first I bought when I lived alone—it’s still one of my favorites.

wp253 04 2 napkin, jan treeDuring my single days in Chicago, I used to have friends over in December, one at a time, to drink cocoa, cider or tea in front of my tree. Two very close friends, Jenneine and Jan, supplied me with these decorations that still showcase their personalities thirty years later.

wp253 05 fortune cookie orn 20191225The fortune cookie ornament given to me by my husband, Rob, reminds me of his proposal. He had two special cookies made at a fortune cookie factory in Chinatown, Chicago. Inside one read: Marriage is on the horizon. The other: Your destiny is to be Sondra Sula. The problem was, he needed to know which was which so he could give them to me in order, but when he went to pick up the cookies, the factory was on fire. He was lucky to get them at all, and by faith or fluke, I ended up opening them in the correct order.

wp253 06 crazy snowman 20191225We are so perfect for one another. He knew to get me the snowman ornament that was painted slightly wrong, wearing an expression of apprehension rather than jolliness.

wp253 07 2 hermit crab, seahorse ornEarly in our marriage, I got him the surprise gift of a hermit crab. One of my favorite childhood books was Pagoo, the story of a hermit crab, and I thought everyone would love to have one. I was wrong. He was horrified. I had gotten myself one too, bought an aquarium, the whole nine yards. The next morning, I realized my hermit crab had murdered his during the night. After that I had to assure Rob I would NOT murder him in his sleep.

wp253 08 2 dino, shell ornThe seahorse and shell bring back memories of spending time with Rob’s parents in Nokomis, Florida. We even witnessed a seagull drop a seahorse in the sand at Venice Beach. And dinosaurs are self-explanatory when one has a field paleontologist for a husband.

wp253 09 bird, whale ornWe now live in whale country, too. The past two years we’ve missed the last whale-watching boat by a day, due to storms. Maybe in 2020 I’ll remember to book seats on the boat two weeks before the season ends.

wp253 10 bunny orn 20191223I received this bunny egg last week from my friend, Joanie, whom I’ve known since 1987—my Spiegel days. She just came back from Austria, visiting her deceased mother’s birth place. She purchased this ornament in Salzburg, and it represents a special bond we share.

wp253 11 cupcake orn 20191223Lastly, Rob just bought this cupcake ornament for me this Christmas. It’s spongy! And aesthetically delicious. My niece, Heather, has touched it each time she’s come to visit. So I purchased a cupcake ornament for her. To begin her own memories. What stories does your Christmas tree tell?
