Underwater

wp247 01 sea palms 20191028Do you ever have the feeling you’re underwater? Tasks are piled upon tasks are piled upon tasks. Everything seems tangled.

Dancing Leaves II

wp246 1 leaf w centipede 20190915The leaves continue to drift down. One lands next to a tiny curled millipede. Is it napping, taking a break or has it moved on to the next realm?

wp246 2 leaf w lichen soldier 20190915Another leaf falls next to a single lichen that is standing tall for its diminutive size. The cup on the lichen’s top seems ready to receive. I, likewise, have a predisposition for reception.

wp246 3 very green 2 leaves 20190915Has this emerald green leaf let go before its time? Unlikely. Every leaf in The Dance is perfectly orchestrated.

wp246 4 green leaf left slant 20190915Some are ready when their edges turn brown and brittle.

wp246 5 slanted leaves 20190915Others are ready when they start to curl.

wp246 6 split leaf 20190915A few let go when they are missing a part of themselves.

wp246 7 single eaten leaf 20190915Some leaves are preyed upon. They try to hold on to no avail. Is anyone to blame? The natural order of things persists. Each living thing must play its part in The Dance.

wp246 8 leaf w bent tip 20190915Even if a leaf bends over backwards to accept disease, it eventually succumbs. But it has fallen beautifully, gracefully.

wp246 9 single pale ribbed leaf 20190915The All-Seeing Eye is aware of each movement in The Dance—not a single flutter goes unnoticed.

wp246 10 crossed trunks in river 20190915The leaves are a reflection of us—of all that exists. Don’t we make an exquisite pattern?

Dancing Leaves I

wp245 01 2 leaves w screw 20190915Leaves are falling.

wp245 02 1 pale green leaf 20190915Singly.

wp245 03 2 leaves, skeletal 20190915Doubly.

wp245 04 3 leaves w fern imprint 20190915In triplets.

wp245 05 tree in river 20190915Or myriads.

wp245 06 1 skinny leaf 1 20190915Each leaf dances as it falls. One curves and swirls.

wp245 07 leaf w ferns 1 20190915Another sails and gently rocks, wafting down to rest upon the first surface it meets.

wp245 08 1 yellow leaf 20190915I watch a narrow leaf plummet like a diver. Instead of plunging stem first into the river below, it hits a wooden bridge and stops. Its respite is precarious—one gust of wind will send it off the edge.

wp245 09 1 leaf w knot toungue 20190915A rust-colored leaf is bent in upon itself on one side causing it to twirl downwards like a screw. It lands on a wood railing whose knot looks like an eye. The leaf meets they eye’s inscrutable gaze. What transpires is a mystery.

wp245 10 6 leaves 20190915The dancers congregate, communicate, disintegrate as they move to the next stage of their lives: duff, detritus, rich loam for the next generation.
